Mlango 2.0: An interview with Peter Uittenbroek

by Kees Hink last modified 2008-06-25 15:13

Peter Uittenbroek, intern at Goldmund, Wyldebeast & Wunderliebe, tells about the new Mlango release he has been working on.

What is Mlango?
Mlango is a dashboard: it's like iGoogle for Plone. A member can tailor his dashboard to his needs, for example by adding RSS feeds from his favourite news site.

What is the difference with the 1.x release?
Mlango 2.0 is easier to use. The old version required a configuration file, and references to page templates which had to contain certain macros. Non-technical users had difficulties there. In the new release, modifying your dashboard only requires clicking on a button.

For technically oriented readers: Can you tell something about the technical aspects?
I made a viewlet into a content-type, so it's easily addable by users. I also used the jQuery-library, so users can drag and drop the viewlets on their dashboard. Mlango 2.0 has been rewritten for use with Plone 3, and can be extended with new kinds of viewlets.

Do want to say something else about Mlango?
It's a great product, and fun to work with. Hopefully it'll be used a lot and we'll soon see more kinds of viewlets.
